PU leather, properly manufactured, sits in category 1 — genuinely waterproof. The polyurethane layer is a continuous film bonded to a backing fabric. Water cannot penetrate the film under normal conditions. The vulnerability is at seams: where two pieces join, the film is cut, exposing the fabric backing. Stitched PU leather seams can wick water through the needle holes.
Welded or heat-sealed PU leather eliminates this vulnerability. The seams are fused rather than stitched, creating a continuous waterproof layer.
